“Shhh… It’s a secret!” I love it when my grandson says this. I know I’m going to hear something he thinks is really important.
Want to know how to Grow skills in your team so they are successful during a change?
Can you keep a secret? It’s easy! Just help them GROW...
G = Give them opportunities to use the strengths you identified in the previous step, Navigate Strengths. When each person in the team works through their unique strengths, they are engaged. The work gets done much faster and more accurately than when people are working through their weaknesses. (Gallup, “How Employees’ Strengths Make Your Company Stronger, February 20, 2014.)
R = Recognize when they do something well. Share the results you notice or the effort they are putting in. This lets them know what to keep doing. According to Gallup research (The Ideal Praise-to-Criticism Ratio, March 15, 2013), the ideal “praise” to criticism ratio is 5 to 1. It’s easier to hear criticism when we know that the leader recognizes the good we’re doing. Look for future blogs on this in coming weeks.
O = Openly discuss barriers they experience or challenges they are having. Invite them to share these with you. Then, after hearing them, it's your turn to share your ideas about opportunities for improvement. Ask for their input about how to overcome challenges, and work to remove barriers. Let them know you’re in this together and that you will support them to be successful.
W = Work together to identify ways to create continued success and sustainable change. Is training needed? Would a mentor help? Is job-shadowing an option? What other ways can you and your team identify that will create the desired outcomes?
Helping your employees Grow Skills really isn’t a big secret. It’s sort of like the secret my grandson shared with me. He said, “Mimi, I love you!” Showing you care for your employees and their success goes a long way to creating the outcomes that will GROW their skills to sustainable success.
