It’s that time of year when we think about counting our blessings. Many people think about the usual stuff: job, family, a special event, moving through tough circumstances.
This year consider kicking it up a notch. Use this time to think about the accomplishments you’ve experienced over the past year. Read on to find out how and why.
Here’s how to do it simply:
Keep a journal over the next week or so and write down accomplishments as you remember them. This can be a handwritten journal, or an open electronic file. The goal is to write down as many achievements as you can think of. If, like most of us, you struggle just trying to remember last month, look at each month on your calendar over the last year. What story does your calendar tell about what you were doing?
Celebrate! You’ve worked hard this year. Take a few minutes to pat yourself on the back, eat an extra piece of pie, or whatever represents celebration to you. Celebrate with your employees, too! While there are a variety of ways to do this, one of the favorites among my clients is an easy storytelling format that starts with, “Remember when…” Invite team members to begin the story this way, and to add the details that outlined the struggles, the problems solved, and the positive results. And don’t forget to personally acknowledge individual accomplishments. Employees love getting a personal individualized note thanking them for their contributions. This is a great way to share the value their strengths and talents bring to the vision of the company. And, it can be done anytime over the next month (not to mention anytime in the coming year!)
Look for patterns and trends in the list of accomplishments. These will create a blueprint for success in the coming year. Plan your 2018 goals around this insight.
What can you learn from the patterns and trends?
Where did success come from?
What methods created that success?
What market created the most revenue?
What attracted that particular market?
What strategies did you use for decision-making?
How did those strategies work/not work?
What decisions created the most traction?
What are three things you can focus on in the first 90 days of the new year that will lay the foundation for a trajectory of success?
When you count your blessings this week and over the coming weeks, make them count for next year. Not only will it feel great to realize how hard you’ve worked and what you’ve achieved over the last year, it will set you up for a successful new year!
